In the town where I was born, lived a man who sailed to sea...

So, a few years back, my dad told me a story of what he did when he got drafted into the Red Army back in the late 1950's. Apparently, as the Soviets were switching their submarines to nuclear power, and hence giving them the ability to stay underwater much longer, their military made the decision to never allow the subs to surface where they could be detected by US spy satellites. Instead, secret underground bases would be built where the subs could dock. My dad was conscripted to dynamite out the inside of a mountain for one of these bases. Wild - like something out of a James Bond movie!

Anyway, here are some pics from an abandoned Soviet submarine dock inside a mountain. Pretty amazing...

Very cool.

Didn't Indiana Jones ride a sub to one of these things in Raiders of the Lost Ark? (Or am I misremembering?)
