Developmentally Delayed
About 18 months ago, a few years shy of my fortieth birthday, I randomly learned to snap my fingers - something I had been unable to do as a child and frankly, had given up on many years ago.
Now, it seems that after a lifelong aversion to coffee, and hence looked upon as an outcast by mainstream society, I find out that I actually enjoy the beverage, especially a dark roast with some cream (no 2% milk for me) and sugar.
Odd...

I found the exact same thing! Since I hit 40 I now enjoy coffee, and never in my entire life did I like coffee. Also started to enjoy whiskey. Still can't snap my fingers though. And I have no sympathy for you about having to take a director job in a big corp. You should be so lucky! Also, I pondered that question for many years. I came to the conclusion that there are 3 critical factors:
1. ability
2. personality
3. energy level
Techno geeks like you and I often focus on 1, and maybe 3. But in fact number 2 is by far and away the most significant factor in attaining senior leadership roles.
Congratulations on finding new vices to enjoy! Doesn't it make life a more fun place to be?
