Interesting. I would say that traditional Southeast Asian art (think tapered Thai helmets on bejangled goddesses) somewhat resembles this whole Mandelbrot pattern even more than a Buddha.
Also resembles some of the sand painted mandalas from Tibet. But I'd say there is defintely a resemblance to the seated buddha statues.
