R' Ovadiah Yosef - Secular teachers are "asses"

So, the fact that R' Yosef likes to drop statements like this should not surprise anyone, including myself, but in this instance I fail to understand his reasoning.

Spiritual leader of the Ultra-Orthodox Shas Party, Rabbi Ovadia Yosef called secular teachers in Israel "asses" on Saturday during his weekly sermon.

Yosef has previously voiced his desire that the Education Ministry be handed over to Shas' authority.

In his sermon, the rabbi said that the teachers in the secular education system know nothing, "neither Shabath, nor holiday", and teach only "nonsense", and added that people whose parents placed them in the secular education system are unfortunate.
"What do they teach? They teach history and all sorts of nonsense about world nations, that's all," he said.
(haaretz)

So, you could argue that the secular curriculum is missing subjects that he considers essential, but since teachers usually teach what they are trained in, how does this make them "asses"? If I considered it important for my child to learn Calculus, and R' Yosef does not teach Calculus in his yeshiva, does that make him an ass?

Calculus? Hah, Arab stuff! We will have none of that! In this we must follow the example of the heilige Bharatiya Janata, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and others of that ilk, who so wisely rejected all of Arab knowledge in favour of Vedic math.

So too the ultras must reject all science that is not in Talmud. Including higher math, medicine, electricity, internal combustion engines, and central heating.

Transportation by donkey cart, or on the backs of asses, however, is still okay. I advocate special lanes on the freeways to accommodate them.

Sorry, rampant free-association going on in the above. I have just buckets of respect for Ovadia Yosef. Tons. Meant no disrespect. Really. Echt, un' ba emmes.

Remember the bentshing-licht issue?

Rav Ovadia paskened that the brocha should be said BEFORE the lighting of the candles - and that doing it afterwards was the idea of "a few stupid women. A woman's knowledge is only in sewing --- women should find other jobs and make hamin but not deal with matters of Torah."

The argument for bentshing before kindling is that with all other broches one says them before the act one is blessing (a blessing performed post-facto being a brocha levatulah, in this case al pi Rambam), the argument for bentshing afterward is that kindling is issur on shabbes, and saying the blessing makes one mekabel shabbes - in addition to it being a custom of long standing that the lighting precedes the brocha. Both the Ben Ish Chai and the ReMA hold the latter view. And it should be noted that lighting the candles must be done before sundown, hence the practice is to anticipate shabbes, just as with havdalah we seek to prolong the sense of sacred time.

Of course, seeing as light turning to dark at sundown is mostly a hypothetical item for rav Ovadia, he might wish to keep his thoughts on shabbeslichten from ever reaching the light of day ....

Every time Rav Ovadiah says something, I have to stand in a corner and repeat "He's old and knows a lot of Torah...he's old and knows a lot of Torah and it's really not a good idea to hate him" until my blood pressure goes down.

As offensive as he is, I love that he doesn't care if he insults anyone. You gotta give him credit for his brazenness! I'd rather have a straightforward, honest bigot like Ovadiah than some smarmy politician who pretends to be my best friend, then talks down about me behind my back. With Ovadiah, there's no pretending!

That is because Ovadiah knows he's right. The bigot politician knows that he is wrong.
