Either they're way too conservative or they're fashion snobs.
I would offer that non-conformism is the very essence of being Jewish. There are nearly a billion Christians. Nearly a billion Muslims. And roughly fifteen million Jews. Many of whom live amidst Christians and Muslims.
Being a non-conformist is so much a Jewish thing that it pretty much has a halachic basis.
But there's an orthodoxy to the non-conformist minhag - woe if your nonconformism does not conform.
