Anxiety
Was listening to an anxiety researcher on the radio. According to her, Americans have very high anxiety levels, much higher than say Nigerians, or Chinese, or Monterrey Mexicans despite what we would think would be much less stressful lives.
According to her the key differences are - the rugged individualist ethic of Americans, which means no reliance on community or extended family, and the abundance of choice with the corresponding stress of making the right choice.

"no reliance on community or extended family, and the abundance of choice with the corresponding stress of making the right choice"...this is a valid point, I believe, that further supports my opinion that quality of life is better for those heavily vested in their traditional Jewish communities (MO or Chabad) with large families and "old world" values.
Nechama, are you MO, CHABAD, or neither?
I would say that am a Conservative Jew that found her way to a wonderful small Chabad community about 5 years ago. My 15 year old is a true MO. The rest of us in the family are steadily working toward 'catching up' to him.
