Groundhog Blog

How many reincarnations of a blog does it take to stop arguing about the Mabul?

Lately, it seems that Solomon Schimmel has been commenting on blogs like XGH and BHB. At first I was pretty stoked about that, but the more I thought about it, the more I got upset with Dr Schimmel and others like him, like David Shatz, etc... These people, who devoted their entire career to studying psychology and philosophy should be the ones leading the dialogue and debate with the more fundamentalist wings of Judaism. Not people like us, computer programmers, accountants, managers, whatever. That is if they actually want to influence the world instead of just observing it from their ivory towers.

And frankly, if they did this, the rest of us would have an opportunity to learn quite a bit, and not shoot our semi-educated mouths off.

I totally disagree with you. What makes Schimmel & Katz etc any more knowledgeable than us on these issues? On the contrary, we & Mis-nagid, S, DB etc etc ARE the experts on this whole topic.

Well, speaking for myself, I don't have the time to devote to studying all the work that has been done before us - we are not the first to tread on this topic. S. maybe an expert in his field because I think this is what he does for a living... You and DB have entertaining blogs, and have certainly opened many valuable topics for discussion, but your role is not researchers and scholars. Which doesn't mean that you are not arriving at the right answers, just that the methodology behind your answers is fairly lightweight...

And it's Shatz, not Katz :)

Still disagree. We don't need to research, we ARE the research.

SFE, I think you have an excellent point. It's not that they can replace us, after all, we're IN IT. We live the tension of straddling two worlds. They don't. However, they could be leading a parallel dialoge. BTW, Who is Shatz?

It sounds like Shatz does his share, maytbe not in the form of a blog, but he's teaching about it.
